My tips to friends on how to learn English

Dear Elix and all trainees,
Most of you are parents, and you want to teach your children English. Elix asked me how I taught my son, David, so I am writing to share.
I taught my son English as follows. I make a summary for your reference.
I. Start as early as possible. After his birth, he could listen to some English, which was not meant for my son, David. But he really got chance to feel English objectively.
When he was three or four years old, I taught him some words with pictures and  I spoke very simple English with him, but I didn't ask him to memorize the spellings of words because I was afraid he would lose interest if I did. When he was 6 or 7, he was able to talk with me in easy English for fun or practical communication. When he was between 8 and 11, we learned many dialogues about different topics of much wider varieties. Even older, we read many many abridged English novels. His vocabulary and experience in English kept improving. When he came to Harbin to meet Marilyn, he was able to communicate with her and other American teachers fairly well. When he went to CCHS as an exchange student, it took a short time for him to fit in.
II. I tried a lot to get David to be interested in English. I taugh him simple English songs and we sometimes watched English cartoon movies, though he could not understand all the  lines.
III. I set the goal of learning English to use it but not to cope with examanitions, so we communicated with each other by listening and speaking. I did not help him to do written exercises which were usually the only part about English learning for most of the students in China. I fostered David English abilities or skills strictly in the order of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, focused on a certain skill in different stages.
IV. Good pronunciation is the base of good English. I attached lots of importance to polishing David's pronunciation when he started to learn English. Listening tapes or foreign teachers if possible are good ways.
V. Last but not least, persistence is crucial for the big success. Keep on doing long enough, then time for harvest will certainly come.
Hope the words above can help. If you have some good ways, let me know please.
Yours,
Peter Zhang
